#003 | WHO THE F*CK IS: HEKLER?
Heckler – a person who interrupts a performer or public speaker with derisive or aggressive comments or abuse. HEKLER – one of the most promising bass representatives of the young generation.
The star of the third installment of #WTFI is a 22-year-old Vegas-born Shaun Bacus, who has been creating music since he was 13 years old. In 2010, HEKLER started with the production of hip-hop beats and listened to the first mixes of the UKF Dubstep channel, having no idea how their tracks are made (btw. we didn’t have one either). Noisia, G Jones and Bleep Bloop are the three artists from whom he caught a glimpse of experimental electronics, and at school, he played on… trombone!
Asked by Trillvo in mid 2017 for a story behind HEKLER alias he said:
“My favorite question that everyone ask. Like I tell everyone this is kind of weird but one night about 7 months ago I was contemplating on quitting music and going to college, gettin and 9-5 job living a normal life because I didn’t see myself growing or stability. That same exact night I fell asleep and had the craziest dream. I saw myself playing Cosmic Meadow at EDC and saw the exact logo I use today behind me with HEKLER spelt the same exact way. I feel that was the universes way of telling me that I was brought to this world for music and only music.”
At the beginning of 2015, his friendship with the “electronic” elements of production finally began, and two years later it was presented to the world in the form of a hybrid trap banger Ultimate. The first serious figures on the bass stage who started to support Shaun’s release were NGHTMRE and Slander duo. Thanks to their “support” the pseudonym HEKLER became more and more noticeable, so, at the turn of 19 and 20 years of age, the American visited the whole world giving concerts in various corners of the planet. In August 2018 (a year after the release of Ultimate) in an interview for relentlessbeats.com he said:
“So when I released “Ultimate” I had never played a show in my entire life and I reached out to DJs. It got support from artists like NGHTMRE and Slander, all these big dudes started reposting my stuff. Then I got booked for my first gig and from that point, I’ve played all over the entire world. I just got back from an Australian tour. I’ve played in probably in every city in the states.”
In 2017 Shaun released VIP version of Ultimate, a collaboration with G-REX entitled Crude Boys, collab EP with Whipped Cream entitled Mirrors and some original productions like Fallout, Cyborgasm or MegaLink.
In our opinion, 2018 was (and probably others too) a breakthrough year for a 21-year-old. It was then that three productions were released, which in our opinion are still one of the best hybrid trap tracks of recent years. We mean here the original Basic Bass Tune, the collaboration with MARAUDA (formerly Mastadon) entitled Buggas and collab, which certainly knows (or heard) everyone who reached that moment of the article – an amazing 404 w/ Gladez:
In the same year, HEKLER had the pleasure to perform in legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre with DJ Snake and Virtual Self, in Heineken House at Coachella or during Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas and released a collab with Ekali & TYNAN entitled Blood Moon and created official remixes for Herobust and Boombox Cartel.
Over the last eight months, he dropped his debut solo EP via Never Say Die Records entitled What The Hek, two collaborations – Doom (Calcium) and Wraith (YOOKiE) and two solo songs – Nightfall and WOAH – published this week. In mid-May, Shaun fulfilled his craziest dream and was the last artist to perform on the Cosmic Meadown stage on the second day of EDC Las Vegas.
Since July 13th he has been on a world tour, where he has played thirteen concerts, including festivals such as Moonrise Festival, HARD Summer, Audiotistic and German New Horizons Festival!
fun fact: On the day of the performance at the New Horizons Festival Hekler was turning 22 years old. Happy B-DAY!
Insomniac Events – the company responsible for the organization of such events as EDC, HARD, Beyond Wonderland, Electric Forest or Okeechobee, describes the hero of our entry in the following words:
“Touted by many as the future of bass music, Vegas-born Shaun Bacus aka Hekler has carved out a place of his own with his unique take on trap / dubstep. With an emphasis on eery / aggressive sound design, he has a real knack for pushing musical boundaries. What started as a passion project has slowly gained serious momentum and shows no signs of stopping. His music is now supported by most of the biggest names in the industry. It’s hard to deny this kid’s talent and you will be seeing his name everywhere soon enough”.
Our favorite track? It’s hard to choose one, but because of the fact that we are truly day one fans, we remain faithful to ULTIMATE:
